CHAPTER 13. THE COVEN

In the latter part of the twentieth century, Michael Ellul had begun to make a name for himself as a psychic and astrologer. While lecturing before a woman's club in upstate New York, he noticed a woman that was not all like most of the women in these hamlets, mostly by the way she dressed, all in black with a long skirt and a sleeveless blouse cut in a daring manner. Something about her seemed familiar. Nonetheless, he could not quite recall where he had seen her before. Her straight black hair hung to her waist and was tied with a black ribbon. Also, she was constantly changing positions in her seat, chewing gum and twisting a handkerchief as though she was either nervous or bored. During an intermission, she was the first to jump up to go outside for a smoke.

Whenever he looked at her, she smiled and batted her eyelids. Because of this, he did not often turn in her direction. He figured her for a groupie, psychics have them as well as rock musicians, baseball players and movie actors. He noticed, too, that she had a five-pointed star, a symbol of witchcraft, tattooed on one breast.

As Michael drove back to his motel, his rear view mirror told him that a pickup truck was following him. As he traveled around, especially in rural areas, he’d had some bad experiences from bigoted elements because of his pagan beliefs. Because he had once been beaten up, he kept a pistol in his glove compartment. He retrieved the weapon and placed in his lap. In the motel parking lot, he loaded it and stuck it into his jacket pocket before exiting his car.

The pickup pulled into an available parking spot seconds after he did. He kept his hand on the pistol until he saw who got out of the other vehicle. The lot was dark, so he could not easily make out the features of the figure who stepped down and headed toward him. As the person crossed under the motel sign, he saw that it was woman, one he recognized immediately by her nervous manner and long skirt. It was the groupie. He laughed and crossed his arms as he waited for her to approach.

She said nothing but advanced until she so close he could have kissed her by merely bending over. She gazed into his face in a challenging manner. "Don’t you remember me?"

He studied her for several seconds. “You do look familiar.”

She placed her arms around his neck. "It’s Morgaine, Michael. Your one true love.”

His eyebrows raised and his mouth dropped open. “Oh Morgaine, it was so long ago. So many years, centuries for me, have passed. To tell the truth, I had forgotten what we were to each other. There’s been other women, women who I’ve also been deeply in love with. It never even occurred to me that I would live to see the time in which you existed in this world.”

“Does that mean that you don’t love me anymore?”

In reply, he bent down and kissed her hard.
